This baby-only newborn session was held in the comfort of my client’s home. Baby Harper was just five days old, and rocked her session like a champ. Using only natural light, we achieved beautiful sets that are just timeless. I packed a few things that are versatile and complementary to any aesthetic. The images below are a few client favorites.

Seeing the importance of having a great photo to match her impressive resume shows me that she sees the big picture, and will no doubt be great at whatever she chooses to do professionally.

I graduated college in 2008. At that time there was almost no social media. Facebook was just picking up steam at that time, and jobs were only to be found by word of mouth or from a company’s website. Sure, the newspaper was still a thing (gosh I feel so old talking about the newspaper!), but there was no need for a professional headshot. Nowadays these personal branding sessions are so important. They’re great to obtain a new job position, marketing or advertising your existing business, or for social media content to grow your following!

These sessions can be held in my home studio space located in north Denham Springs, or at a location of your coosing. While I tend to stay in the “simple, clean and classic” look, I am always open to bringing your persoal branding vision to life. I would love to see how we can work together to create something amazing for you!

Family Photographer Baton Rouge | Leann Messina Photography | Why Springtime Is Great For Outdoor Portraits

It’s no doubt that the most popular time of year to have photos taken is the fall. It’s at this time that most of us are thinking about updating our wall portraits and getting a nice photo for Christmas cards, too! So much is going on in the fall, that a family photo session might be at the bottom of your list. What you may not know is that my favorite time to shoot is in the spring! I am such a sucker for beautiful, blooming flowers, birds chirping, and feeling the warmth from the sun that I haven’t felt in a while. Being outside during this time of year just brings happiness to my soul.

If you catch an opportunity before daylight savings, then you can get that nice golden hour look without having to keep your babies out too late! I know mine are in bed between 6:30 and 7:30, and golden hour after we turn the clocks forward is just too late for us. We would have some tired, grumpy faces by then!

After the hustle and bustle of the holiday season have died down, you finally catch your breath for a sec. The cold winter months of January and February might have you feeling a little down in the doldrums. An exciting photo session might be just what you need as a little pick me up! Something to look forward to.

And my last point to make is that THIS could be a Mother’s Day gift to yourself! I have a client I shoot every couple of years with her two teenage boys, and she gets them to cooperate by calling it her Mother’s Day gift. She’s brilliant!

Such a sweet story as the Corbin family welcomes a new bundle of joy. With his big sister just 19 months old, they’re sure to have their hands full for a while! Delivering at The Birth Center at Baton Rouge General, they received excellent care and were even allowed to bring in their family to visit! This is the first of my client’s families to be able to meet the new baby in the hospital since March of 2020! Things are slowly getting their way back to “normal”, and it feels so good!

I almost died over how beautifully this little guy’s session turned out. I loved meeting him, his mother, and her cousin who was nice enough to drive them over all the way from the West side of the river in Port Allen! Mom asked for whites, browns, and blues to be incorporated into his session, and I’m absolutely loving the earthy, natural tones here. Henry was such a good little baby. I can’t wait to see him again!

My favorite newborn wraps I use are hand-knitted by a talented creator in Estonia! I love the matching bonnets she includes. One day I would love to be able to create my own wraps, but I just don’t seem to have the time these days! I have knitted small layers for my sets as you see in the last photo!

The white wrap, woven basket, greenery, and muted wood floor have me feeling like this might be one of my favorite sets. Clean, simple, elegant, and doesn’t take focus away from the baby.

1. They change so quickly.

It’s no secret that our kiddos, especially in the early years, grow like weeds. I notice when my girls’ hair gets longer, their faces thinner, and their smiles brighter…and it seems to have happened overnight. It’s true for older ones too, though. Teenagers turning into young adults seem to change just as fast. You’ll never get these years back, and photos are all you’ll have to remember these precious moments. Doing yourself a favor and working with a professional photographer is something you will not regret.

2. Fill your home with something meaningful.

Are the last photos you had printed and framed in your home from your wedding? Or maybe you never have had professional photos taken, and your home is filled with random pieces of art and decorations you picked up at Hobby Lobby. I read once that children LOVE to see themselves in photos. Seeing themselves in family photos raises their self-esteem. It gives them a sense of security, belonging, and shows that they’re loved and valued. Personally, as a mother, when I pass our portraits on the wall, my heart smiles a little each time.

3. A great gift idea

The obvious is that you can order prints from your session and give them to loved ones as gifts. Something you may not always consider is that you can buy a photo session for someone else! Someone who may not feel like they want to invest, but YOU know how much you love your portrait sessions and know they will be so happy they did it if given the opportunity. And there are many gifts you can create with your photos, too, like photo books, mousepads, coffee mugs, and pillows.

4. You’re always the one taking the photos.

Are you always the one holding the camera or snapping photos on your phone? So many of us have tons of photos of our loved ones, but rarely are we included in those precious photos. Hiring a photographer allows you a chance to be IN the photos! That’s a given.

5. An investment you won’t regret

Have you ever spent a lot of money on something, and you didn’t use it like you thought you would? I’ve never heard anyone say, “Oh, I wish we never had those pictures made,” there’s no such thing as too many pictures, only too few. Investing in photography is sure to continue bringing you joy. Assuming you choose the right photographer, you won’t regret it.

6. We won’t always have a chance.

I don’t mean to bring anyone down with this point, but it’s true. Accidents and illnesses happen all the time and take our loved ones from us before we’re ready. When we lose someone, we’re scrounging for photos, anything to keep our precious memories of them alive a little longer and hold on to them tight.

7. Embrace the present.

Even if you have a crew that you KNOW won’t cooperate, embrace it. Also, if you’re a little heavier than you would like to be, embrace it. This time is your present, juggling kids left and right or seeing your teenagers growing into young ladies and men. It’s a huge part of this time in your life, and it won’t always be like this! Stop it for just a minute and revel in it. Enjoy it. Embrace it.

8. Your family is growing!

It’s simple. You’ve added another sweet little baby or dog or cat, and you need to update your photos of your growing family.

Are you breastfeeding and have a newborn session coming up soon? Well, I’m glad you’re here because I have a few tips that might be beneficial to you. We all know that babies are fussy when they are gassy. Just mad, sometimes inconsolable, and there isn’t much we can do until they pass it. Surely, some moms swear by things like Gripe Water and Infant’s Mylicon, but did you know the foods you eat can sometimes determine the temperament of your baby?

I am no lactation expert, but I did spend four years of my life breastfeeding my own babies. A labor of love, and one of which I feel privileged and proud. During the last go-round, I went dairy-free for nearly the whole duration because my babe had a sensitivity to cow’s milk protein. No joke, we called her “Mad Baby” the first four to six weeks of her life because she cried so much. After I cut out dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter mostly), she was a CHANGED BABY! It was the craziest thing, and something I was more than willing to do to keep her tummy happy.

So much prepping and planning goes into making your Newborn Session successful, and you, too, can plan ahead to help things run smoothly on your session day. The day before your session, try to avoid foods that are known to create gas buildup in a baby.

FOODS TO AVOID THE DAY BEFORE YOUR NEWBORN SESSION:

Try to eliminate the following: spicy foods in general, cabbage, onions, broccoli, beans, kale, spinach, artichoke, asparagus, cauliflower, cumin, curry, garlic, peppers, and cow’s milk for kicks.

Even some fruits can cause digestive disturbances that are highly acidic, like oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, pineapples, and strawberries, and should be avoided.

And I know how little sleep you’re getting since your baby was born, but skipping that morning cup of coffee is a great idea. I’m not saying you can’t have coffee on your session day. Maybe just wait until after your session is completed to get that fix!

Oh, this sweet girl is the brand new little sister of a sweet boy who came in for his Mama’s maternity session. She was born 8lbs 3 oz. When she came in for her session at 19 days old, she had already surpassed her birth weight! With a gorgeous head of hair and a sweet little face, I introduce baby Emma!

Most of the time we strive to achieve the cute, sleeping baby look. Sometimes when baby has had enough beauty sleep, they’re ready to look around and see their surroundings. I adore awake shots. When babies are awake, they often show their personalities and make the cutest and funniest expressions! So if you’re worried that your baby won’t sleep or “behave” during their session, just know that I am comfortable and prepared for every baby to wake up at some point!

The idea of being a corporate businesswoman is nice, but growing up it was never something I saw myself doing. I love the way ladies look a good business suit, pencil skirt, and button-up blouse. It reminds me of Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. (Gosh, how I love that movie.) Alternately, I’ve worked in healthcare most of my career, and I rock the good old faithful scrub life. Serving others is where I thrive. It’s my jam if you will, and as a result, my feet ache at the thought of wearing heels for periods of time longer than an hour and a half.

I am obsessed with this studio newborn session. I was lucky enough to photograph Big Brother, William, for all of his milestones. Now I get to do the same with baby sister, Ann!

They are just about the same distance apart as I am with my brother, and I just know they are going to be best friends. As children, we used to play so well together. We played tea party, dress up, cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, you name it!

And as teenagers, we ran in the same circles with the same group of friends. This was advantageous to me because I could stay out about an hour later if I was at the same place he was. He kept a close watch, and (mostly) kept me out of trouble. I know William and Ann will have the same connection and make wonderful memories together.

I am so thankful to be a newborn photographer with a studio space conveniently located in Denham Springs, right on the outskirts of Baton Rouge, so that I have the opportunity to capture beautiful images like these. As a result, I can’t wait to see which ones Mom prints for their walls.

If you are considering if your toddler will cooperate or not, know this. It only takes a couple of minutes to get a great shot. There will probably be snacks, trickery and bribery involved. We do whatever it takes! All the while, ensuring the safety of your newborn baby, as baby’s safety is of the highest priority. And it’s always a great idea to have an extra hand take the big sibling home/to the park/library while we finish up with baby.
